Before the creation of the Federal Trade Commission's National Do Not Call Registry, nearly every state had passed legislation to create state-run do-not-call (DNC) lists. Now, a new state-driven political trend is emerging: proposals for do-not-mail (DNM) registries.
Already this year, 10 states have introduced DNM bills: Connecticut, Colorado, Hawaii, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, Montana, New York, Texas, and Washington.
The Direct Marketing Association (DMA) is actively working with state business groups and communicating with legislators about the importance of direct mail for consumers, businesses, nonprofit organizations, and the economy.
At least one major newspaper agrees with DMA that do-not-mail lists are unnecessary. The editors of Denver's Rocky Mountain News published an editorial in late February titled, "Is Junk Mail So Bad? Misguided Plan Would Hurt Local Businesses. "Â
